The End of Yahoo Era by Verizon

Yahoo was one of the first companies which opened the way in the internet world for many of us.
Now Yahoo reached almost end of its life as an independent company. The American telecommunication company Verizon Communications announced on Monday that it acquires Yahoo’s core internet business. Yahoo’s board approved the sale at $4.8 billion. From just a cell phone company to transforming to something more is the purpose of this deal. The news grabbed the attention of tech giants, industry leaders, and mobile app development companies USA and across the world.
So we have to know first why Yahoo failed:

What went wrong with Yahoo?

A leader in email as well as online news and search in 90s and early 2000s- Yahoo, why it failed to sustain?
  1. The series of bad choices of CEOs
It is easy to criticise the current CEO of Yahoo Marissa Mayer and her strategy, but she is just the current CEO in a long line of sub-optional CEOs of Yahoo.Yahoo appointed CEOs at an increasingly rapid rate before appointing Mayer.

In 2008 Carol Bartz was appointed as Yahoo CEO, then Tim Morse, Scott Thompson in 2012. The change of CEOs at this rate could not give time a company to sustain. Scott Thompson did 2,000 job cuts, earned himself $7.3m for 130 days’ work. Then Ross Levinsohn became the Yahoo CEO and left before Mayer became CEO in July.

2. Yahoo didn’t rate technology and didn’t hire good programmers

"Yahoo treated programming as a commodity. The job of programmers was just to take the work of the product managers and designers, and translating it into code," claimed former Yahoo employee Paul Graham.Facebook, Google, Microsoft hired the best programmers, but Yahoo put everything in the hands of project managers and designers.

3. Yahoo behaved as a media company, not a technology company

Yahoo continued as a media company with dollops of technology, though, it didn’t come in the race of Google and Facebook. Google and Facebook advertisement platforms are effective with content-strategy. But Yahoo created advertising products and platforms, but not created user-centric content. No-one wants to pay for subscribing to newspapers and magazines without getting pre-subscription benefits. But Yahoo focussed more on it and get nothing as compared to Google and Facebook.

4. Hadn’t buy Google

In 2002 Yahoo had a chance to buy Google. Then after months of negotiation the Chief Executive Terry Semel balked at the $5 billion price. Somebody tech leaders says this was the biggest mistake done by Yahoo.

Yahoo Timeline
  • 1994 – Yahoo founded
  • 2000 – Yahoo valued at $125bn at height of dot.com boom
  • 2002 – Yahoo didn’t purchase Google
  • 2008 –Refused Microsoft’s $44.6bn offer
  • 2013 – Yahoo acquired blogging site Tumblr
  • 2015 –Yahoo faced net loss of $4.4bn
  • 2016 – Verizon agreed for $4.8bn deal to buy yahoo

DEAL FROM THE EYE OF VERIZON

This is a quite big amount for a company whose online business falling from grace. Yahoo at one point was the first name coming into mind for internet search, but now another companies are doing that job quite good.

Verizon chief executive Lowell McAdams wants a larger share of the booming digital advertising pie. And he thinks this deal will help him. Verizon is a leading US mobile phone network, which has a wealth from smartphone users.

Verizon purchased AOL a year ago. Now with Yahoo, Verizon will gain Yahoo’s 600 million monthly active mobile users, also its email service, Tumblr, Yahoo Finance etc.

Sites like Engadget, Yahoo Finance, Huffington Post and TechCrunch will now do advertisements for Verizon, that can be more effective depending on the knowledge of Verizon about its mobile customers. It will help Verizon to compete with Google and Facebook.
Simply Yahoo couldn’t do it alone as it doesn’t have enough data on its one billion or so monthly users to target and to stand in the race of Google and Facebook.
We will hear more concrete details from Verizon in coming time. It may be using Yahoo brand, or maybe not.
Regardless, Yahoo as an independent company is finished and there is new era started with the name Verizon.
This is the lesson for all tech industry including web application development companies USA, mobile apps development companies NYC and overall software industry across the world.
Bottom Line
“If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success.” - John D Rockefeller (Founder of  the Standard Oil Company & Philanthropist).

How to do App Store Optimization?

In today’s digital world, there are many mobile applications which are in the race. In various app stores like Google Play, iTunes, Windows Store etc, there are thousands of apps which are competing to get ranked.
There are lots of people in the field of mobile app development companies New York. Among these also, there is a throat cut competition in iOS, Android and windows app development as these are the operating systems people are using more.
So the question is - how to get rank to our app in the app store? App Store Optimization is the solution for this. Below I am giving the best strategies to do ASO and to get traffic to your app in the app store.

Best Practices to Optimize App Store:

  •                Use of important keywords in app title – The keyword placed in title should be one of the most searchable keywords. It is very helpful to improve the search rankings of your app. According MobileDevHQ report, only 16% apps in app-store having keyword in their title, remaining 84% apps didn’t use keyword in title.

  •       Tracking of keywords – Only use of keywords is not sufficient. It needs always tracking the keywords to know the app position. Google’s Mobile App Analytics, Mopapp, and MobileDevHQ are some free app analytics tools.

  •  Number of Downloads – The number of downloads attracts the users towards the app. App reviews and ratings, social media can be used effectively to promote the app, which will results in the increased number of downloads.
  •  Ratings/Reviews – It plays very important role which one should consider, as users read reviews and check ratings before downloading any app. So keep an eye on the reviews your app getting, and try to work on negative reviews by solving users’ issues. Encourage happy customers to write reviews and share their recommendations for your app.

There are some tools to track and analyze reviews. Appbot is helpful to track the reviews in Google Play, iOS and Amazon and can post them on Zendesk, HipChat, Slack, Trello, or have a facility to send them daily via email to you

  •   App Icon – The first impression of your app is an app icon. It should be simple but should reflect what your app is about. Complex icons can’t be properly visible on smaller devices, and it should be avoided.
  •   Screenshots – Screenshots are also one of the first thing visitor will see about your app. The first 2 screenshots are most important, as they are visible while scrolling in search results. Each screenshot must guide the visitor what facilities the app is providing. And there should be screenshots of important modules of your app with supplemental text.
  •  Preview Video – Preview video with highlighted key features also plays a crucial role in convincing the visitor. iOS app store and Google Play allow short videos.
  •  Localization – It makes a huge difference. The feature of translating an app in different languages makes a great role in increasing the downloads.

Conclusion
Remember ASO is not a onetime work. The people should do ASO continuously with the good practices. It will help to sustain in the competition of other apps and to get good traffic.

UBER – The story of Hard work behind the success

Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp had trouble in hailing a cab on a snowy Paris evening in 2008. And a simple idea came– tap a button, get a ride. As an effect, Uber services and mobile app officially launched in San Francisco in 2011.

The growth graph of Uber is eye catching as it expanded it to a new city every month from May 2011, including New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C. Then it launched in Toronto, Canada and a 90-driver launch in London in 2012.

Now Uber completed its four successful years in London. But this journey was not easy, as every business has to go from a hard time to get success. App-driven businesses were trending that was what Uber embraced. Today all sorts of App-driven businesses are getting their mobile app developed from top mobile apps development companies NYC to launch an innovative venture to the market.

Here are some of the issues Uber faced around the world –

Paris – In June 2015, France taxi drivers went on strike. They said that Uber is unfairly undercutting them, while the company claimed it is just because of badly organized market.
France’s Court of Cassation called for a constitutional review of language in the law. Uber France’s chief Thibaud Simphal said the company is contesting judicial rulings around France and winning.

Spain – In December 2014, Uber was temporarily suspended in Spain, as judge said Uber represented unfair competition. The Madrid commercial judge said that drivers of Uber lacked proper permits to transport passengers in Spain. After some days Uber shut down operations in Spain temporarily.
Again in March 2016, Uber was relaunched in Spain and the Uber‘s director for Southern Europe – Carles Lloret said “We want to be transparent with the government and we want to maintain a very open dialogue to see how we can build a regulatory framework in Spain that makes sense in both a European and a digital context”.

Netherlands – A Dutch court ordered Uber to stop their UberPop service that works with drivers who don’t have license. Though Dutch Transport Minister Wilma Mansveld relaxed Dutch taxi legislation to make it easier for new services to enter into the market, but not for the UberPop service, as Mansveld said that cars for UberPop service doesn’t meet all the criteria for taxis under Dutch law.

China – Chinese government banned private cars’ drivers from offering services through apps. Police raided Uber offices in southern city of Guangzhou, and found thousands of iPhones and other equipment used to run the Uber business. Also city’s transport commission said that Uber was operating an illegal taxi services without a proper business registration.

India – A top government official has said to ban Uber service as one of its driver was accused of rape in New Delhi.
Also the New Delhi police say if Uber is misrepresented the safety of its service then there will be the possibility of criminal charges against Uber.

US – The California Labour Commission ruled that Uber drivers should consider as a company’s employee, not as an independent contractor.
In San Francisco, an Uber driver accused of seriously injuring a bicyclist in a road-rage incident and then he was arrested.

Success of Uber
Apart from these problems, Uber is successfully running in many big cities worldwide, because it understands the need of people and tries to overcome all the obstacles coming in their way of serving the customers. Uber grow their business from launching a small app in San Francisco to operating business in more than 300 cities worldwide. Their updated service and highly functional and easy to use app plays an important role in their success, as their business is mostly depended on their app.
Uber got historical growth in just five years. Now they are operating more that one million active drivers in more than 300 cities. Uber’s 32 year-old head of global operations in a wide-ranging – Ryan Graves said “Investors are betting on the future success and reach of the service. We've really never let them down”.
London is the 11th city where Uber launches their app, but the they have written a success story in the way that no other taxi market had attempted to disrupt, and the result is Uber’s fourth birthday in London.
